What is it?

Intertextuality is the relationship between media texts. It refers to the relationship between two media texts and why they are chosen. An example is whena music video is created with links to other forms of media such as video games, films and other music videos.

Intertextuality.

An example that I have looked at in particular is in the music video of 'You know me' by Robbie Williams, released in 2009. There are a number of intertextual references seen in the video from 'Alice in wonderland', the obvious one being Robbie Williams appearing in the rabbit costume. This creates clear intertextuality between the film and the music video as it immediately forces the audience to think of the film when they see the music video. This is cemented further later on at the end of the music video where Robbie Williams is shown in the MGM logo, who produced Alice in Wonderland, this confirms the intentional use of intertextuality.
